Comets Weekend Roundup: Guyton Shines for Comets Archery

Cottey College programs delivered one of their strongest collective weekends of the year, highlighted by a state record in archery, a 47–0 flag football shutout, a doubleheader softball sweep, and a top‑four finish for Cottey Cheer. From individual milestones to dominant team performances, the Comets made noise across every arena.

 

Archery – Botts Sets State Record, Comets Sweep Fixed Pin Podium

Cottey Archery turned in a historic weekend at the Oklahoma JOAD & Adult Series, headlined by Xitlali Botts, who not only won 1st place in Fixed Pin, but also set a new Oklahoma state record in the event. Her performance continues a season of rapid progression and consistency.

The Comets nearly swept the entire division:

In Compound, Allison Nalley added another podium finish with a strong 2nd place showing.

Guyton also delivered a standout performance at the NFAA tournament, breaking the 290 barrier with a 293, just seven points shy of a perfect 300 — one of the top scores in program history.

Cottey's depth, precision, and momentum continue to build as the postseason approaches.

 

Flag Football – Cottey Rolls to 47–0 Shutout at Bethel

Cottey Flag Football delivered a complete, wire‑to‑wire domination in a 47–0 road shutout at Bethel (KS), controlling every phase of the game and piling up 237 yards of total offense while allowing just 35.

Offensive Highlights

Quarterback Raniya Griffin was electric, throwing for 203 yards and 6 touchdowns, spreading the ball across the field with confidence and tempo.

Her top target, Tahmya Squire, turned in a monster performance:

  • 9 receptions

  • 133 yards

  • 4 touchdowns

Additional scoring came from:

  • Dominique Derraco‑Franklin – receiving TD

  • Xitlali Botts – receiving TD

Cottey scored on drives of 24, 30, 13, 21, 30, 49, and 24 yards, consistently winning field position and capitalizing on short fields.

Defensive Dominance

The Comets' defense was relentless, recording:

  • 7 sacks for 50 yards

  • 4 interceptions

  • 25 total tackles

  • 0 points allowed

Monica Blanc led the way with 8 tackles and 5 sacks, while Aryah Alexander, Derraco‑Franklin, and Botts each added interceptions.

Cottey fell 40–27 to Pratt CC later in the weekend, but the shutout win at Bethel showcased the team's ceiling when all three phases click.

 

Softball – Comets Sweep Sterling with 22 Runs and Four Home Runs

Cottey Softball put together one of its most explosive offensive days of the season, sweeping Sterling in a doubleheader behind 31 total hits, 22 runs, and four home runs.

Game 1 – Cottey 7, Sterling 5

The opener featured early power and steady pitching.

  • Amelia Gassman opened the scoring with a two‑run homer.

  • Makayla Snyder delivered the big swing of the game — a three‑run home run in the third.

  • Grayce Taylor continued her hot streak with a 3‑for‑4 performance.

Addison Tippie earned the win, and Brianna Meyer closed the final three innings to secure the victory.

Game 2 – Cottey 14, Sterling 4 (5 innings)

The nightcap turned into a showcase of offensive firepower.

  • Halen Hoelzeman blasted a three‑run homer in the first and finished with 5 RBI.

  • Carissa Camaclang launched a grand slam as part of an 11‑run third inning.

  • Taylor, Martinez, and Gassman all recorded multi‑hit games.

In the circle, Tatianna Colegrove struck out 11 in a complete‑game win.

Cottey committed zero errors across both games, pairing clean defense with overwhelming offense.

 

Cheer – Comets Finish 4th at Avila Eagle Invite

Cottey Cheer continued its strong inaugural season with a 4th‑place finish at the Avila University Eagle Invite. The Comets delivered one of their cleanest routines of the year, showcasing improved stunt execution, sharper timing, and rising confidence as the season progresses.

The program continues to build momentum heading into its final competitions of the spring.

 

A Weekend of Momentum Across the Board

From record‑breaking archery performances to dominant wins on the field and explosive offense on the diamond, Cottey Athletics delivered a weekend full of statement performances and upward trajectory.

The Comets return to action this week looking to build on a weekend defined by excellence, depth, and competitive fire.
