The Cottey Comets esports team had a busy Fall season, competing in multiple leagues and tournaments. For two titles, the end of the regular season marks the end of the fall season. Overwatch and Super Smash Bros each had a some bright moments, but just missed out on qualifying for the NACE (National Association of Collegiate esports) playoffs in their respective divisions.
Super Smash Bros
Super Smash Bros had a rocky start to the first year in action, but have learned many lessons, and are looking forward to gaining their first win in the spring season. Sophomore Kuiper Naefe has been the most consistent player for the squad, taking the most stocks. Freshmen Aviana Broadfoot and Caroline Ferguson have made great leaps of improvement, which they hope to showcase in the spring semester.
Overwatch
This semester was a bit of a rebuilding process for the Overwatch squad. With multiple new players joining the roster, it took a while for players to gel and find their groove. But, recent results have shown the promise of the group, as they grabbed their first victory in a Show Match at Simpson College. While they won't qualify for the NACE playoffs this semester, there is plenty to be excited about for the Spring Semester. Sophomore Kyleigh Sigears has come into the team and really been a leader for the esports squad. Fellow Sophomore Tori Wright has also been a consistent performer in the DPS role for the Comets. Freshmen Shelby Wines and Circe Tosta have each made their mark early in their esports careers as well.
Valorant (NACE Record: 6-0, 1st Seed for Playoffs)
The Valorant squad has had the most success on the virtual field this semester. They boast a perfect 6-0 mark in NACE competition, a good sign for the playoffs. They have locked in as the 1st seed for the playoffs, which comes with a bye into the semifinals. This semester also marked the Comets' first KCAC victory in conference play, a win over the York University Panthers. This was by far the most competitive season yet for Valorant in KCAC action. The Comets also grabbed a crucial victory in a Show Match of the Simpson College Storm, a key rival in NACE competition. Junior Captain Lucy Liu has led the way for the Comets, with the most Kills on the team (431), and a new record for single season for the program in Valorant. Freshman Gibsun Harkins has been a key lynchpin for the team, showing great maturity as a newcomer to produce multiple round winning plays. Kuiper Naefe and Ella Sapinoso continue to be great pieces for the squad, continually providing crucial assists and planting the spike regularly. Freshmen Circe Tosta and Ella Carlin have also made great strides of improvement and contributed to key wins.
