Overwatch Upsets UNC-Greensboro for First NACE Playoff Win

The Cottey College esports Overwatch team made the most of their Round of 6 playoff match against UNC-Greensboro, winning 3-1. It was the first NACE Playoff victory for the Comets Overwatch squad in program history. The Comets won a tiebreaker to qualify for the playoffs, doing just enough to punch their ticket. As the #6 seed, they took on #3 UNC-Greensboro.

Sophomore Kyleigh Sigears has really stepped into a leadership role this semester, playing the Tank role, and making in-game calls that the team has followed well. Circe Tosta and Tori Wright have been the main Damage roles, with each garnering multiple round winning kills and making plays. The trio of Ella Sapinoso, Gibsun Harkins, and Daphne Hedrick have rotated on the Support role, healing their teammates throughout the match and keeping the Comets engaged in the teamfights.

Map 1 was a Control map, where teams attempt to establish control over certain points on the map for 100 seconds. It is a best 2 out of 3 affair, and the Comets grabbed control early winning Game one by a score of 2-0.

Game 2 was UNC-Greensboro's choice on Hybrid. A map where each team takes turn on offense and defense, trying to capture a point and then move a truck throughout the map. The Spartans dominated Map 2 to even the score at 1-1.

Flashpoint was Game 3, where like Control, teams attempt to dominate spots on the map in a best 3 of 5. The Comets did not drop a single point, snagging the 3-0 victory in Game 3.

With a 2-1 Game advantage, the Comets only needed one more game victory to take the match. Game 4 is Push, where teams attempt to move a robot toward the other team's base. After time expires, whoever has moved the robot further wins. It was a back and forth affair, with the Comets reaching 64meters, while holding the Spartans to 57meters. With the win in Game 4, Cottey had secured the Match Victory.

The Comets now take on #2 seed Anderson University on April 9th at 6pm. Fans can catch the action at twitch.tv/cotteyesports.
