It was a windy Saturday afternoon as the Cottey Comets took on the Midland Warriors, but the game was full of excitement and action. The Warriors would end up grabbing the victory 12-6 in a closely fought contest.
Midland would do most of their damage early in the first quarter, taking their opening drive down the field for a score. After that score, the game was neck and neck the entire way. The Warriors would score again in the 1st quarter, but that would be it for Midland. The Cottey defense tightened up and stopped their opponents from reaching the end zone again.
In the 2nd quarter, the Comets got new life when Amya Corulla found Shamese Lee on a pass; Lee would take the ball 26 yards to the end zone to put Cottey on the board and cut the score to 12-6. While the Warriors had the lead heading into halftime, momentum was on the Comets side.
About halfway through the third, the Comets got a goal line stop, and began moving the ball. Unfortunately the drive stalled and the Warriors got the ball back. With just under 10 minutes remaining, Shamese Lee again made a big play, this time on defense. The sophomore cornerback read the quarterbacks eyes and broke on the ball for an interception, running it to the Midland half of the field. Unfortunately, the Cottey drive stalled and no points put on the board. Midland would have a methodical drive down the field, aided by a few untimely penalties, to run the clock out on the game.
Corulla was the leading passer for the Comets, putting up the Touchdown and 58 yards. Tahmya Squire was a do-it-all threat, putting up 42 passing yards, 82 rushing yards, and 9 receiving yards. SHamese Lee was the leading receiver, catching 3 passes for 45 yards and the touchdown. Sophomore Keriyion Cloyd had a productive day for the Comets, rushing 4 times for 15 yards, while catching 4 balls for another 20 yards. On the defensive side, Shamese Lee was all over the field, having 10 tackles, 2 passes broken up, and an interception. Keri Cloyd added 3 Tackles and 2 Sacks, and Joliette Johnson had 5 tackles.
Cottey falls to 2-5 Overall, 1-5 in KCAC action. The Comets return to action Wednesday, going on the road to take on St. Marys in Leavenworth, KS for a 6pm game. Fans can tune in at kcacnetwork.com/stmaryks
