Cottey Flag Football Grabs Road Victory at Southwestern

Cottey Flag Football Grabs Road Victory at Southwestern

It was a defensive battle for 3 and a half quarters, but the Cottey Comets finally broke through in the 4th quarter to score the games only points. The 6-0 scoreline would hold and hand the Comets their 4th victory on the season, also avenging their home loss to Southwestern earlier in the year.

The opening drive of the game saw Quarterback Amya Corulla have a big run of 24 yards up the left sideline to take the Comets into Moundbuilders territory. However, a sack and a couple incompletions would halt the momentum and the drive. The Moundbuilders would drive into the red zone on their opening drive before the Comet defense came alive to deny them any points on their drive. A rush from Amya Corulla would take it to the end of the 1st quarter with the scoreboard showing a 0-0 tie.

Corulla would get a first down to open the 2nd quarter with her legs, but thats all the Comets could muster, punting after a couple completed passes. A penalty would award the Comets the ball back, and Corulla found Tahmya Squire on a quick pass for a 19 yard gain. A quick run up the middle would garner Cottey a first down and put them in the red zone. Corulla found Joliette Johnson on a short pass on 1st down, and Shamese Lee on 2nd down for some yardage. However, the Moundbuilders would hold tall on 3rd and 4th to deny the Comets a score. The Moundbuilders would get a huge pass play to set up deep in Comet territory, but once again the defense prevailed. Cottey would punt on their next drive, give Southwestern the ball with under a minute remaining. Shanell Norris would grab an interception on a long pass to keep the scoreline level heading into halftime.

The 3rd quarter began much like the first half, with both defenses holding strong.  Southwestern got a big punt return into the red zone, but a Suzanne Aubert sack took the wind out of the Moundbuilders sails, forcing a punt. However, on the ensuing drive, Southwestern would grab an interception of their own to once again threaten in the Comets side of the field. Once gain, it was Aubert coming up with a huge sack to halt any momentum. With the stop, the Comets took the ball into the 4th quarter.

In the 4th quarter, there were signs of offensive life. Corulla found Laurencia Botts on a quick out, and then Botts bobbed and weaved her way through the defense for an 18 yard gain.  Corulla would then find Shamese Lee for a crucial 4th down conversion to keep the chains moving. Finally, the floodgates would open when Corulla found Squire on a seam route up the middle of the field for a 25 yard Touchdown pass. The 1pt conversion would fail, but the Comets had the lead. Both teams would trade possesions as the clock ran down. The Comets had the ball with a 4th and 10 around the 2 minute mark, when Corulla found Squire once again on a deep route for a 1st down and 19 yards. The Comets would run out the clock on a 6-0 victory.

The win lifts the Comets to 4-8 Overall, 3-8 in KCAC action. Cottey returns to action on Monday for a road contest with Baker University.
