Comets come up short on road at Baker

Comets come up short on road at Baker

The Cottey Comets went on the road to KCAC rival Baker for a conference contest, and came up on the wrong side of a 22-6 game. Despite the final score, the Comets were on the front foot for most of the contest, but a few moments late ended up being the difference.

Baker had the ball on the opening possesion, but were halted on 3rd down when Suzanne Aubert came up with a huge sack of the Baker quarterback, forcing a punt. The Comets couldn't get much going on their first drive, forcing a punt back to the Wildcats. It looked like the Comets would stop Baker again, but this time the Wildcats opted to go for it on 4th and 10, and converted. Baker would drive inside of the Cottey 10 yard line, but could not punch it in. That was the end of the 1st quarter, still 0-0 on the scoreboard.

The Comets would open the 2nd quarter with a few nice gains from quarterback Amya Corulla on the ground, before punting back to Baker. Baker's quarterback did almost all of the damage on the next drive as she scrambled up the sideline for a touchdown. Baker would also convert on the 1 point conversion making the score 7-0. The Comets would quickly answer back, powered by a huge 42 yard pass play from Corulla to Shamese Lee. On 4th and Goal Corulla found Shamese Lee for a 1 yard touchdown pass. The Comets couldn't convert the extra point, but tightened the score to 7-6. Cottey would hold Baker to a punt on their next drive, getting the ball back with just over a minute remaining in the half. Cottey would attempt a few deep passes as time was running out, getting intercepted to end the half.

Cottey would march down the field to open the 2nd half, in big part to a huge deep ball completion between Corulla and Tahmya Squire to set up deep  in the Baker redzone. On 4th down, it looked like Shamese Lee had a circus catch for the touchdown, but in the pandemonium the ball came out and was ruled incomplete. The Cottey defense stepped up big again forcing a punt, resulting in Cottey getting the ball in Baker's  half of the field. The Comets would be driving as the 3rd quarter came to a close. The score headed to the 4th quarter remained 7-6.

Cottey would get to the 1 yard line in the 4th quarter, but again coming up short from scoring. Baker would finally get their offense going, driving down the field to score a touchdown and 2 point conversion with 4 minutes remaining. The score would read 15-6, which in flag football is still a one score game, as teams can convert a 3 point extra point. It looked like that might be the case before an injury derailed the Comets drive. The Wildcats would score again to make the final scoreline of 22-6.

Corulla was both the leading passer and rusher on the game, putting up 200 yards through the air and 43 on the ground. Shamese Lee was the leader at receiver, catching 10 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Tahmya Squire and Kenzie Murdoch each caught 5 passes as well. On Defense, Suzanne Aubert had 2 sacks and 5 tackles to pace the Comets. Shamese Lee had 5 tackles and a pass break up. Shanell Norris had 5 tackles and an interception.

The Comets return to action Wednesday for a home contest against Saint Mary at 6pm.
