Comets Fall in Home Finale against Hesston

Comets Fall in Home Finale against Hesston

For two and half quarters, it look like the Comets might come away with a victory in the regular season finale against Hesston, but the Larks stormed back to take the contest 33-12.

The first half was more of a defensive affair, it wasn't until late in the first quarter when any scoring happened. Cottey got on the board first with a nice over the shoulder catch by Laurencia Botts to make the score 6-0. Hesston got a TD of their own plus the extra point to take a 7-6 lead into halftime. Cottey did a great job limiting Hesston's quarterback Kaley Phillips, who is a dangerous runner, limiting the Larks to seven points and intercepting Phillips twice. Shanell Norris and Alina Jeanbaptiste each came away with an interception to power the Comets defense.

After Jeanbaptiste's interception, the Comets had great field position to start the 3rd quarter. The Comets would drive down and score on a Amya Corulla rushing TD. The 2-point conversion would fail, but Cottey held a 12-7 lead. Midway through the 3rd quarter, Norris' interception took the wind out of the Larks sails. The momentum would shift back Hesston's way as they returned an interception for a touchdown. Hesston took the 13-12 lead and never gave it up. The Comets offense would have good chunk plays, but could never find the end zone again. For Hesston, their quarterback Kaley Phillips used her legs to do most of her damage in the 2nd half.

The Comets were led in receiving by Shamese Lee, putting up 3 catches for 57 yards. Lee would also lead the way on defense with 9 flag pulls. Joliette Johnson had a good day catching the ball, pulling in 4 passes for 43 yards. Keri Cloyd caught 3 passes for 20 yards, and Laurenica Botts' touchdown catch was her first of the season.

The loss drops the Comets to 6-11 Overall. Cottey will face Baker in the opening round of the KCAC Tournament on Saturday, April 20th at 10am.
