Cottey Softball goes 3-2 at Friends Tournament, upset #17 Ottawa

The Cottey Softball team headed west for the Friends University Tournament in Wichita, KS, and came home with a 3-2 record. One of those victories was a ranked win, taking down #17 Ottawa 5-2 in the tourney opener.

Against Ottawa, Lauren Johnson and Aryana Palencia each smacked Home runs in the Top of the 3rd inning, while Alyssa Montoya kept the Braves in check in the pitching circle, and the Comets took the 5-2 victory. The win pushed Montoya to 4-0 on the year when pitching for the Comets.

The second matchup saw the Comets take on Mayville State. The high scoring affair had the Comets on the losing end of a 14-11 shootout. Once again Lauren Johnson hit a Home Run, while driving in 3 RBIs for the Comets. Abigail McPherson got the start in the circle, while Brooke Vicory, Amelia Gassman, and Braylen Ford each took a crack trying to tame the Mayville State hitters. Karina Ramirez would go 4 for 5 in the leadoff spot, and scored 3 runs to pace the Comets.

Game 3 had Cottey take on the hosts, but fell on the wrong side of a 4-3 contest. Cottey would score all 3 of their runs in the top of the 1st inning before Friends made a pitching change. Friends would score 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, and 1 each in the 4th and 5th innings to snag the win. Amelia Gassman went the entire way in the circle for the Comets. Lauren Johnson's double was the main offense in this one, as the Comets struggled after the pitching change.

Cottey would rebound in Game 4, taking a 10-5 game against Hastings College. Putting up 7 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Comets kept themselves in contention. Lauren Johnson, Jenna Wilson, and Makayla Snyder each had a double for the Comets, with eight different Comets having an RBI in the game. Brooke Vicory took pitching duties in this one, and went all 7 innings, spreading 8 hits out to get the Win in the circle.

The final contest of the tournament saw Cottey win a tight one against York University 3-1. Once again, it was Vicory in the circle, limiting the Panthers to a single run in the contest. Jenna Wilson and Makayla Snyder would knock in the RBIs for the Comets, with Elizabeth Thomas going 2 for 3 from the plate and scoring a run. The Panthers actually outhit the Comets 8-7, but Cottey's defense showed up to limit the damage.

The tournament takes Cottey's record to 9-9 on the year, with a week off before taking on Baptist Bible in Springfield for a doubleheader on March 11th.
