Monday's doubleheader was a sneak peek at a future conference matchup on the softball diamond. Cottey traveled to Springfield, MO to take on Mission University for a doubleheader, sweeping both games. Mission University was recently renamed, formerly known as Baptist Bible, a familiar opponent for Cottey Athletics this season. Now, the Comets will face off with the Patriots in American Midwest Conference play when Mission joins the AMC next year.
As for this matchup though, Cottey took Game 1 by a score of 14-0. Amelia Gassman took the circle and went the distance pitching a dominant no-hitter shutout victory. She struck out 11 batters and only walked one. Gassman's walk of Kate Potter was the only blip on the entire scoreboard, coming ever so close to a perfect game. On the offensive side, Halen Hoelzeman had her first Home Run of the season, with Lauren Johnson and Karina Ramirez each tacking on 3 hits apiece.
Game 2 was more of a battle, with Cottey taking it 12-4. Mission actually held a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Cottey offense went to work, capping off their 7th inning with 6 runs. Brooke Vicory got the start in the circle, going 4.2 innings to get the win. Braylen Ford came in and pitched 2.1 innings of no-hit ball, only walking one. Lauren Johnson was the leader on offense this time around, putting 2 doubles and 3 RBIs on the board. Halen Hoelzeman kept her hot streak going, with a double and an RBI while getting the start at 3rd base. Jenna Wilson had three hits while catching behind the plate.
With the victories, the Comets are 11-9 Overall, with a home series with Central Methodist on Wednesday. Game times are 1 and 3pm.
