Comets Split Doubleheader with #4 Central Methodist

The Cottey Comets Softball team pulled off a big split against #4 Central Methodist in a home doubleheader. The Comets took Game one 8-5, and fell in Game two 10-2.

Brooke Vicory got the start in the pitching circle for Game One, which started a little rocky. Vicory gave up 2 Home Runs in the Top of the 1st, but pitched great for the remainder of her 4.1 innings to get the win. Alyssa Montoya came in to finish the final 2.2 innings and see the Comets through to the victory. On the offensive side, Elizabeth Thomas came through with a huge set of 4 RBIs while going 2 for 3 from the plate, with a walk as well. Jenna Wilson mashed a monster solo Home Run to add a little juice into the Cottey lineup. Karina Ramirez went 2 for 3 at the plate, while also getting a walk, scoring 3 times to keep the scoreboard hot for the Comets in the first 3 innings. Central Methodist would make a comeback attempt by scoring 3 in the top of the 6th inning to make it an 8-5 score, but that was the final run scored by either team. In the end, the Comets take the 8-5 win during Game one of the doubleheader.

The Eagles of Central Methodist showed why they are a top ranked team in Game two; taking the second contest 10-2 in 6 innings. Amelia Gassman got the start in the circle, with Braylen Ford coming in to finish out the game. Ford would strike out 2 batters in just 2.2 innings of work. It was tough sledding for the Comets on offense in game two, as they would only manage 2 hits. Karina Ramirez would keep her hitting streak alive with a single in the 3rd inning. The bright spot came in the 1st inning, after Alyssa Montoya walked, Lauren Johnson would go yard to tie the game 2-2 in the 1st inning. CMU pitcher Jordyn Ball would shut down the Comets the rest of the way.

With the split, the Comets stand at 12-10 overall. They now have two Top-25 ranked victories, over #4 Central Methodist, and over #23 Ottawa. Cottey returns to action Friday with a road doubleheader at Baker University, set for 5pm and 7pm contests.
