Softball Sweeps Home Opening Series over Sterling College

Cottey closed out the February 28 doubleheader with one of its most complete days of the season, taking both games from Sterling behind a combined 22 runs, 31 hits, four home runs, and zero errors. The Comets won the opener 7–5 with timely power and steady pitching, then erupted for a 14–4 run‑rule victory in Game 2 behind an 11‑run third inning and a dominant outing in the circle.

 

Game 1 — Cottey 7, Sterling 5

Cottey set the tone early in the opener, answering Sterling's first‑inning run with a two‑run homer from Amelia Gassman, scoring Alehsandra Martinez to give the Comets a 2–1 lead. After Sterling tied the game in the second, Cottey regained control when Martinez drew a bases‑loaded walk to make it 3–2.

The breakthrough came in the third inning when Makayla Snyder crushed a three‑run home run, extending the lead to 6–2 and giving Cottey the cushion it needed. Sterling chipped away with runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh, but never closed the gap to fewer than two.

Cottey's offense finished with 15 hits, including doubles from Martinez, Gassman, Hoelzeman, Taylor, and Camaclang.

Offensive leaders:

  • Snyder: 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

  • Gassman: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI

  • Martinez: 2-for-2, 2 RBI, 2B

  • Taylor: 3-for-4, 2B

In the circle, Addison Tippie earned the win (4–2), striking out four over four innings, while Brianna Meyer closed the final three frames to secure the 7–5 victory.

 

Game 2 — Cottey 14, Sterling 4 (5 innings)

After Sterling again opened with a two‑run homer, Cottey responded immediately. Halen Hoelzeman launched a three‑run home run in the bottom of the first, scoring Gassman and Martinez to put the Comets ahead 3–2.

The game broke open in the third inning, where Cottey delivered one of its biggest innings of the season — 11 runs on 10 hits, sending 15 batters to the plate.

Key moments included:

  • Carissa Camaclang's grand slam, pushing the lead to 7–2.

  • Martinez's two‑run single, extending the margin.

  • Gassman's RBI single and Hoelzeman's two‑run single, continuing the onslaught.

  • Grayce Taylor's two‑run single, capping the inning at 14–2.

Hoelzeman finished with five RBI, while Taylor, Martinez, and Gassman each recorded multi‑hit games.

Offensive leaders:

  • Hoelzeman: 3-for-3, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R

  • Camaclang: HR, 4 RBI

  • Martinez: 3-for-4, 2 RBI

  • Taylor: 3-for-3, 2 RBI

In the circle, Tatianna Colegrove was dominant, striking out 11 in a complete‑game effort to improve to 5–1.

Across both games, Cottey showcased:

  • 31 hits and 22 runs

  • Four home runs (Gassman, Snyder, Hoelzeman, Camaclang)

  • Zero errors defensively

  • Strong pitching from Tippie, Meyer, and Colegrove
