COMET AWARDS
The annual Comet Award winners have been revealed in each sport for the 2019-2020 season. The basketball program awarded the Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Champions of Character Award, and the Scholar Athlete First and Second Teams.
The Champions of Character Award is awarded for demonstrating the five core values (Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, Servant Leadership) of the Champions of Character during the 2019-2020 season. Senior, Kasey Acton of Traverse City Michigan is the honored recipient for the basketball program and has demonstrated a true commitment to Cottey College and the five core values of the NAIA over her four year career.
The Offensive Player of the Year award went to senior, Kelsey Acton of Traverse City, Michigan. Acton led the Comets in points per game every season of her four year career and capped off her senior year by averaging 12.9ppg and second on the team in offensive rebounds (59) and assists (56). Acton shot .324 from the field and a team high .288 from three point range.
The Defensive Player of the Year award went to senior Latasha Griggs of Boise, Idaho. Griggs helped out the Comets in multiple categories during her senior season. She finished second in defensive rebounds and fourth in steals while playing high energy defensive on the perimeter.
The First and Second Team Scholar Athlete Awards are given out to outstanding student athletes who reach grade point average benchmarks. First Team recipients have earned a grade point average of 3.75 or greater while Second Team recipients have earned at least a grade point average of 3.50.
